INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Plan & Prepare Substrates for Solid Plastering course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in planning, preparing, repairing, sealing and priming substrates for solid plastering in accordance with work instructions, surface conditions, material requirements, plastering finish requirements, manufacturer specifications, workplace procedures and safety requirements.
Planning and preparing substrates for solid plastering involves interpreting work instructions, assessing the worksite, selecting suitable tools, equipment, materials and personal protective equipment, and preparing surfaces so they are suitable for plastering. In real workplace practice, this skill area is important because substrates must be checked, repaired, cleaned, patched, filled, sealed and primed correctly to support adhesion, finish quality, material compatibility and safe, efficient plastering work.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to plan, prepare and sequence substrate preparation; apply NCC, Australian Standards, WHS, environmental, manufacturer, workplace, drawing and specification requirements; select and use PPE; inspect worksites, control hazards and apply signage and barricades; select, check and report faults in tools and equipment; select, calculate, handle and position materials; determine and apply patching and filling methods for surface type, damage, compatibility and finish; prepare masonry walls, attached piers, sheet walls, ceilings, chipped corners, holes, depressions and other faults; remove protruding and loose materials; apply sealing and primer coats; understand primers, sealants, plaster compounds, finishing coats and additives; and complete clearing, disposal, reuse, recycling, cleaning, maintenance and storage requirements.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can plan and prepare substrates for solid plastering by interpreting work instructions, applying required standards and workplace requirements, selecting and checking PPE, tools, equipment and materials, controlling hazards, repairing and preparing different substrate types, applying suitable patching, filling, sealing and priming methods, understanding material characteristics and limitations, and completing clean-up, waste, recycling, maintenance and storage activities according to workplace procedures.
TOPICS COVERED IN THIS ASSESSMENT:
