The Rolex website describes the Oyster Perpetual as "a direct descendant of the original Oyster, introduced in 1926, which established Rolex's reputation as the world's first waterproof wristwatch.

The Oyster Perpetual is a model that can be said to be the origin of Rolex, incorporating two of Rolex's three greatest inventions: the waterproof and highly durable Oyster case and the self-winding Perpetual mechanism with a rotor that rotates in both directions.

The Reference 1501 was produced from the 1960s to the 1980s and has a decorative bezel. The case size is relatively small at 34mm, but the volume of the bezel makes it feel like it is actually 36mm.

The finely cut bezel with large marks every 5 minutes is called a finely engine turned bezel. In addition to the Oyster Perpetual, this bezel can also be found on some hand-wound Oyster Precision and Air King models.

The dial is matte black with silver lettering, giving it a sporty feel. The dial and hands are both lumed with tritium.

In addition, there is a σ (sigma) mark on both sides of SWISS at the 6 o'clock position on the dial. This marking can be found on watches made by manufacturers that belonged to an organization called APRIOR from about 1973 to about 2000, and indicates that precious metals such as gold are used for the dial and indexes.

This was added to "indicate that it is a high quality gold Swiss-made watch". It is a specification that can be found on watches from five companies: Rolex, Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, IWC, and Omega, but not on all watches.
