The Story
This painting captures the departing journey of a righteous soul as described in a Hadith. It serves as a reminder of the fleeting nature of this world and the significance of our deeds.
When the believing soul is about to depart this world, they are surrounded by angels, who bring with them the shroud and perfume of Jannah. Then the Angel of Death comes and says: “O pure soul, come to the forgiveness and pleasure of Allah.” The drop of water symbolizes the soul being gently drawn from the body, as described in the Hadith: “Then his soul comes flowing out like a drop of water flowing from a cup.” Inside, the verse “Every soul will taste death” (21:35) is raised.
Surrounding this drop are seven lines, representing the soul’s ascension through the seven heavens, escorted by angels who call it by the most beautiful names it was known by in this world. These words, written within the circle, honor the righteous qualities remembered by others—“the generous one,” “the kind-hearted,” “the helpful one.”
The garden at the top of the painting represents the ultimate destination—the gardens of Jannah, the eternal home of peace.
To the right, intricate Islamic ornamental designs symbolize prayer rugs in a masjid, where loved ones gather to pray over the deceased. The colorful streaks represent the light shining through stained glass windows, reflecting the beauty of the janazah, where the community unites to fulfill their final act of love and responsibility for the departed.
The inclusion of the Surah Yaseen book cover illustrates the importance of reciting this chapter, as it brings ease to the departing soul and offers reassurance about the Hereafter.
This artwork invites reflection: Who will attend our janazah? What names will the angels call us by? What legacy will we leave behind?
May this painting serve as both a comfort and a call to action, reminding us of the temporary nature of this world and the eternal promise that awaits the believers.
