In 1968, Patek Philippe introduced the Ellipse series—a golden ellipse drawn from the golden ratio. This was watchmaking as a blend of geometry, philosophy, and sculpture. This Ellipse feels a little bit more intimate. Slender, elongated, and impeccably balanced, its proportions favor elegance over presence. Measuring a delicate 20mm by 25mm, the case hugs the wrist with a jewelry-like lightness.
The oval case is crafted in 18k yellow gold with a finely textured finish, catching the light with a fabric-like shimmer rather than a mirror polish. The integrated bracelet continues this effect seamlessly, tapering fluidly and reinforcing the Ellipse’s sculptural continuity. The effect is striking, a single, continuous gesture of gold.
At the center sits the signature Ellipse blue dial: solid 18k gold transformed through a patented process to achieve a deep, iridescent blue, perfectly scaled to the case. The cool depth of the dial offsets the warmth of the gold, allowing the applied gilt faceted baton markers and slim gold hands to float effortlessly across its surface. Power comes from a 20-jewel manual-wind movement, the watch stays true to the Ellipse’s philosophy of mechanical refinement.
The 1970s were a standout decade for design. Lines grew wavier and more technicolored, marking a clear move away from mid-century restraint. In watchmaking, the decade coincided with the Quartz Revolution, forcing Swiss manufacturers to reassess what mechanical watches represented. Patek Philippe leaned into its identity as a brand that celebrated craftsmanship. The Ellipse, developed under Jean-Pierre Frattini and executed by Atelier Réunis, introduced a case shape rooted in mathematics rather than trend.
A collector’s piece in the truest sense, this early reference reflects the Ellipse at its origin: proportion as luxury, elegance as design, and finished with the care of fine jewelry.
