An exciting revival is taking place with the Korg miniKORG 700Sm. Miniaturizing the method of the '70s legendary miniKORG 700S analog synthesizer, this reintroduction to one of Korg's classic vintage synths drops in for an exceptionally expressive and powerful piece of equipment.
The miniKORG 700Sm actually takes its inspiration from a few places, actually - prominently the miniKORG 700S of the '70s, but more directly from the Korg miniKORG 700FS, a synth released in very limited quantities. The miniKORG 700FS did something quite similar to what our 700Sm is doing now, minimizing the footprint of the 700S. For fans of those classic, boxy Korg synthesizers, we have this latest version to look to.
At the heart of the miniKORG 700Sm is a system designed by engineers and technicians from the field of synth revival. That's right, for this project, Korg employed a crack team of synthesizer revivalists who hand their hands in plenty of synthesizer revival projects in the past. Among them was Fumio Mieda, a Korg engineer from the '70s and one of the designers of the original miniKORG 700S. Korg meticulously and carefully recreated the sounds of the miniKORG 700S through these talents and the results are sure to speak for themselves.
The miniKORG 700Sm's core character plays with a distinctly vintage inclination from thumping analog basses to singing analog leads. This all comes to fruition through the 700Sm's striking control scheme, including functions for playability like its extensive panels of dials and sliders along with the ever-important Traveler controller – a thrilling and unique function from the 1970s that drastically expanded the playability and control of the synth for boundary-pushing sound profiles. Totally, the 700Sm is a massively expressive and interactive synthesizer for players both new and familiar to its mad scientist-esque control scheme.
