The Parton Family Sings in the Garden Digital AlbumIn 1968, Dolly Partons star was on the ascendancy, and the music publishing company she had founded with her uncle Bill Owens, Owepar Publishing, was rapidly expanding under the management of another uncle, Louis Owens. In 1968, Dolly Parton’s star was on the ascendancy, and the music publishing company she had founded with her uncle Bill Owens, Owepar Publishing, was rapidly expanding under the management of another uncle, Louis Owens. Both Bill and Louis had experience operating their own record labels, and with the resources now available to Owepar, they saw an opportunity to shine the spotlight on other talented members of the Owens and Parton families.

Dolly’s mother, Avie Lee Parton, had been singing and making music all her life, and she passed that musical legacy on to her 12 children. With sacred music such a central part in their lives and home, the decision was made to record a full gospel album with Avie Lee and three of her daughters, Willadeene, Stella, and Cassie.

Produced by Louis Owens and recorded at Nashville’s renowned Starday Studios, the dozen tracks on the album feature a mix of traditional hymns, country gospel standards, and three originals — two written by Avie Lee’s sister, Dorothy Jo Owens, and one by Avie Lee herself. In addition to classic mountain close harmony singing, the mother and three daughters traded off the lead on songs, giving a chance for each member to shine.

Released in 1968 in a limited pressing on the Owepar-affiliated Inspiration Records, the album has become a rare collectors item with copies selling for more than $100 when one can be found. This new edition restores this historically significant and still moving recording to its proper place.

  • Historical liners notes detailing the Owens-Parton family musical legacy

As Good as the Series
Format: Paperback
Reads more like a novel than the first one. I didn't like the style as much but still an excellent book. If you're going to read the series you won't be disappointed.

A mind bender.
Format: Paperback
Robert Monroe's story is such a remarkable one that for me it took a few years of pondering and re-reading various accounts of his "journeys" to come to grips with it as a legitimate reality. Since the early 1960's, Monroe carefully logged many hundreds or thousands of out of body experiences and over the years mastered exit techniques and went on to teach them to many students at his institute in Virginia. Far Journeys is a wild ride and was at times difficult to follow due to the many terms RM coined to describe the completely unknown entities and experiences that became routine for him. Once you get accustomed to the vocabulary, the narrative becomes more intelligible. The book is really something of a travelogue to non-physical reality. He is not stopping along the way to explain things to us readers, but leaving the experiences to speak for themselves. In the end, one is left to grapple with the implications of all he is laying out. Is he just completely insane? I don't think that is the case. Monroe was, in my view, a true modern mystic, born into a highly academic and rational Western world. He brought all of his pragmatism and mechanistic views on the world to bear as he wrestled with his remarkable gifts. He is really the heir to Edgar Casey, and in turn any number of mystics from antiquity.

Well written, entertaining - whether this stuff is true or not depends on your opinion.
Format: Paperback
I loved Monroe's first book. *This* book is entertaining, although annoying at times trying to figure out who's talking. I'm silent on whether I believe Monroe's fantastic stories. But if you're okay with that risk, I'd recommend this for both entertainment & perhaps to help unleash some creativity in your self.
