Herkomst: Deze handelskralen ketting komt uit de collectie van Fofana Sankoung, die vanaf de jaren '60 handelaar was in Afrikaanse kunst (Kumasi / Amsterdam).

Tradebeads kettingen zijn een traditionele vorm van sieraden die hun oorsprong vinden in de lange geschiedenis van handel en ambacht in West-Afrika, met name in Ghana. Deze kettingen zijn vaak gemaakt van kleurrijke glazen kralen.

De handelskralen werden oorspronkelijk geproduceerd in Europa, met name in landen zoals Venetië en Nederland. Ze werden gebruikt als ruilmiddel voor goederen zoals goud en ivoor. Ze werden in Afrikaanse samenlevingen niet alleen gebruikt als sieraden, maar hadden ook symbolische en sociale betekenissen, zoals het markeren van status, rijkdom, of tribale identiteit.
