David Divine gaat in dit boek terug tot de oudste mensen, die grote rivieren probeerden over te steken en met vlotten en later met primitieve boten van het water gebruik maakten om zich te verplaatsen. Het waren in de oudheid met name de Foeniciërs die in belangrijke mate bijdroegen tot de ontwikkeling van de scheepvaart en die zich op de oceaan waagden. Hun traditie zou eigenlijk eerst een vervolg krijgen in de Vikingtijd met expedities zelfs naar Amerika.
Het hoofdthema van dit boek is de tijd van de grote ontdekkingsreizen met mannen als Bartolomeu Dias, Vasco da Gama, Columbus, Magelhaes, Hawkins en Drake. De geschiedenis van deze ontdekkingsreizen is vaak geromantiseerd. Divine tracht echter alles zo nuchter mogelijk tot de juiste proporties terug te brengen en de vele factoren te onderkennen die een rol bij deze expedities speelden. Hierbij is het ook goed te bedenken, dat het ontdekken van nieuw land geen eindpunt was, maar een begin, waardoor vele volkeren in nauw contact met elkaar gebracht werden en de basis gelegd werd voor de wereldhandel, zoals wij die nu kennen.
