Cascina Ghercina is opgericht in 1871 en doorheen de verschillende generaties is een duidelijke missie vooropgesteld: alleen eigen teelt en kwaliteit voorop. In 2002 heeft de familie 8 ha wijngaarden bijgekocht, gelegen op zuidwestelijke hellingen, midden in de Barolo regio. Deze liggen 360 meter boven de zeespiegel en de stroming van de 'Ghercina' rivier tussen de wijngaarden biedt een exclusief microklimaat. Bovendien hebben ze toen 5000m² wijnkelder gebouwd, die gedeeltelijk ondergronds ligt. Hierdoor is de opslagcapaciteit toegenomen tot meer dan 15.000 hectoliter. Het domein heeft ook wijngaarden in Langhe, Alba, Roero, Asti, Monferrato en Gavi. De wijngaarden liggen rond het Chercina meer in het bekende wijngebied Langhe. Daar dankt de naam zich ook aan. Deze plek is uitermate geschikt voor wijnstokken. Dankzij het meer ontstaat er een speciaal microklimaat dat de omringende wijngaarden beïnvloedt. Hierdoor krijgen de druiven zeer speciale kenmerken, die proberen ze tijdens de vinificatie te behouden.Handmatige oogst voor Cascina Ghercina Appassimento Piemonte Barbera
Vijftig procent van de druiven wordt met de hand geoogst en gedurende veertig dagen in manden gedroogd zodat kleur en aroma's zich verder kunnen ontwikkelen. De andere vijftig procent blijft in de wijngaard voor een natuurlijke 'appassimento' en wordt later geoogst. Beide delen van de oogst worden apart verwerkt tot wijn. Na de malolactische fermentatie volgt de blending van de twee wijnen. Vervolgens rijpt de Cascina Ghercina Appassimento Piemonte Barbera zes maanden in kleine houten vaten. won't fit Churchill length or 60-ring diameter cigars

This is a good-looking device, solidly built, with a handy twist-out punch in the top and a humidity gauge in the bottom. The hygrometer is pointless, because there is no way to add anything to actually maintain the humidity, and since I would only use it to bring a cigar to a gathering, it really does not need to maintain that humidity for the 20-minute drive.
What really bugs me about this is the actual useable size. I primarily smoke 2 types of cigars, 54-ring Churchills (which are 7") and 60-ring Gorditos (which are 6"). Although the overall length of this is 8 1/4", the listing never mentions the interior space, which seems to be just under 6 1/2" when closed. My Montecristo sticks out about 1/4" when I insert it, and that does not take into account the 1/4" that the top pushes into when closed (that silver-colored area is solid), thus less than 6 1/2" useable length. Even out of the wrapper, my 60-ring Gorditos sticks when I try to push it in, so I'd have to take off the band(s) to force it in, and it would not slide out very easily, so I would mangle the cigar trying to get it out. So, this can hold a cigar that is 6" or less and maybe 54-ring without the wrapper. Anything else, and you would have to force it in and force it out. So, this unit, while very good looking and well built, does not work for my cigar needs.
