Golden Damsel (Amblyglyphidodon aureus)Overview
The Golden Damsel is a bright, eye-catching marine fish, easily recognized by its stunning golden-yellow coloration and lively demeanor. Its hardiness and adaptability make it a popular choice for both novice and experienced saltwater aquarists looking to add a splash of color to their reef or fish-only aquarium.
OriginThis species is native to the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around coral reefs from Indonesia to the Great Barrier Reef. In the wild, it inhabits sheltered lagoons and outer reef slopes where it schools among branching corals.
FeedingAn omnivore with a hearty appetite, the Golden Damsel accepts most foods offered in captivity. A balanced diet of high-quality marine flakes or pellets, enriched with frozen or live foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, will keep it vibrant and healthy.
Tank MatesGolden Damsels are best kept with similarly sized or slightly larger tank mates that can tolerate a semi-aggressive fish. They do well with wrasses, tangs, and clownfish, but should not be housed with very timid or slow-moving species.
AggressionLike most damselfish, the Golden Damsel can become territorial, especially in smaller aquariums. Providing plenty of rockwork and hiding spaces helps reduce aggression and allows multiple fish to establish territories peacefully.
Experience LevelPerfect for beginner to intermediate marine hobbyists, this hardy species tolerates a wide range of conditions and adapts easily to captive life, making it an excellent starter fish for new saltwater setups.
