Chromis Titanium (Chromis xanthura)Overview
The Chromis Titanium is a striking and less common species of chromis, named for its metallic silver-to-grey “titanium” body sheen contrasted with a bright yellow caudal fin. Reaching around 12–13 cm (5 inches) in length, it is larger than many of the common chromis species and tends to be more assertive in behaviour. Hardy, active, and eye-catching, this species makes a dramatic addition to community reef aquariums with enough space.
OriginFound across the Indo-Pacific region, particularly the Great Barrier Reef, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and Micronesia. Typically inhabits outer reef slopes, lagoons, and coral-rich drop-offs, usually in loose shoals near branching corals.
FeedingAn omnivorous planktivore that adapts easily to captive diets:
- High-quality marine flakes and pellets (staple)
- Frozen mysis, cyclops, and enriched brine shrimp
- Finely chopped seafood (shrimp, clam, squid)
- Spirulina and algae-based foods for balance
Feed 2–3 times daily to keep energy levels high and colours vibrant.
Tank MatesThe Titanium Chromis is generally peaceful but more robust and assertive than smaller chromis species. Best suited with:
- Clownfish
- Tangs and surgeonfish
- Wrasses (reef-safe, semi-aggressive species)
- Angelfish (dwarf or larger, in big systems)
- Other chromis (with caution — best in larger tanks to prevent squabbles)
Avoid very timid nano fish that may be stressed by their activity.
AggressionPeaceful to semi-aggressive. Unlike Chromis viridis, they do not form large tight shoals. Kept in smaller tanks, they may show dominance behaviour and chase conspecifics. Best results are achieved either with a single specimen or in a group of 5+ in a large aquarium where aggression can be spread out.
Experience LevelIntermediate. Hardy and adaptable, but their larger size, assertive behaviour, and space requirements make them better suited for aquarists with medium to large reef tanks.
Water Parameters- Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Salinity: 1.020–1.025 SG
- Hardness (dKH): 8–12
- Tank Size: Minimum 75 gallons (280L) for a group; smaller systems acceptable for a single specimen
Provide open water for swimming along with coral/rock structures to establish territories.
Reef CompatibilityReef safe. Will not harm corals or invertebrates and adds unique metallic colouration and movement to reef aquariums.
