Growing Italian Basil Seeds (Large Leaves):
- Planting Time: Plant Italian basil seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or directly outdoors once the temperature consistently stays above 60°F (16°C).
- Soil Requirements: Basil thrives in well-draining, fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.5). Enrich the soil with compost or organic matter for best results.
- Light: Basil needs full sun—at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. If growing indoors, place basil near a sunny window or under grow lights.
- Planting Process: Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in the soil. Space seeds about 10-12 inches apart to allow proper airflow and growth.
Caring for Italian Basil:
- Pruning: Regularly pinch or trim the tops of the basil plant when it reaches 6 inches in height to encourage bushier growth. Pruning helps produce more leaves and prevents the plant from flowering too early.
- Fertilization: Feed basil plants with a balanced, organic fertilizer every 3-4 weeks during the growing season for healthy foliage. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can reduce the flavor intensity of the leaves.
- Pest Control: Basil is generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract aphids or slugs. Use organic insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary to control pests.
Watering:
- Germination Stage: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during germination, which usually takes 5-10 days.
- Once Established: Water basil deeply about once a week, allowing the top 1 inch of soil to dry between waterings. Basil prefers moist but not soggy soil.
- Watering Tip: Water at the base of the plant to prevent fungal diseases and avoid wetting the leaves. In hot weather, basil may need more frequent watering, especially if grown in containers.
