Dans Cabanga ! les joueurs essaient de se débarrasser de leur main de cartes le plus rapidement possible - mais idéalement sans prendre de pénalités en cours de route. Une fois que les cartes de rangée et les cartes de départ des quatre couleurs ont été placées au centre de la table et que les joueurs ont chacun une main de huit cartes, le tour commence.

À tour de rôle, les joueurs placent une carte à côté de la carte de rangée correspondante au milieu de la table, idéalement avec une différence aussi faible que possible, car plus l'écart est grand, plus il y a de chances que les autres joueurs crient "Cabanga" et lancent les cartes dont la valeur se situe entre les deux cartes de rangée vers le joueur actif. Ces cartes jetées sont placées sur la pile de défausse, puis le joueur actif doit tirer le même nombre de cartes de la pile de pénalité.
