A Bad Woman Feeling Good: Blues and the Women Who Sing ThemAn exciting lineage of women singers originating with Ma Rainey and her prot g e Bessie Smith shaped the blues, launching it as a powerful, expressive vehicle of emotional liberation. Along with their successors Billie Holiday, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, and Janis Joplin, they injected a dose of reality into the often trivial world of popular song, bringing their message of higher expectations and broader horizons to their audiences.
An exciting lineage of women singers--originating with Ma Rainey and her prot g e Bessie Smith--shaped the blues, launching it as a powerful, expressive vehicle of emotional liberation. Along with their successors Billie Holiday, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, and Janis Joplin, they injected a dose of reality into the often trivial world of popular song, bringing their message of higher expectations and broader horizons to their audiences. These women passed their image, their rhythms, and their toughness on to the next generation of blues women, which has its contemporary incarnation in singers like Bonnie Raitt and Lucinda Williams (with whom the author has done an in-depth interview). Buzzy Jackson combines biography, an appreciation of music, and a sweeping view of American history to illuminate the pivotal role of blues women in a powerful musical tradition. Musician Thomas Dorsey said, "The blues is a good woman feeling bad." But these women show by their style that he had it backward: The blues is a bad woman feeling good.Binding Type: Paperback

Perfect, Safe Hose for My Rain Barrel Setup
Style: 1/2-Inch ID, Size: 4 Feet
This Camco TastePURE 4-foot water hose has been perfect for my rain barrel setup. The length is exactly what I needed for a clean, simple connection without excess hose to deal with.
I really appreciate that it’s drinking-water safe with no lead, BPA, or phthalates. Even though I’m using it with a rain barrel, it’s reassuring to know it’s made from safe materials. The reinforced design feels sturdy and durable, not flimsy like cheaper hoses.
The 1/2” inside diameter provides solid water flow, and it’s made in the USA, which is a nice bonus. Great quality, reliable, and exactly what I was looking for. Easy 5 stars.

Wow, It’s 2026, I purchased in 2022!
Style: 5/8-Inch ID, Size: 50-Foot
I just looked up this hose again in my order history to get another. I was shocked to see that I ordered it four years ago. It held up through the most brutal northeast winter in decades, fully expected to it have burst, but no! Reliable and recommended!
