INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Prepare & Install Floor Tiles to Different Substrates course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in planning, preparing, setting out, cutting, installing, grouting, cleaning and protecting floor tiles to different substrates in accordance with work instructions, substrate conditions, waterproofing requirements, adhesive requirements, workplace procedures and safety controls.
Preparing and installing floor tiles to different substrates involves interpreting task instructions, selecting PPE, tools, equipment and materials, checking tile suitability, confirming membrane integrity, preparing substrates, setting out tile work and applying suitable screeds and adhesives. In real workplace practice, this skill area is important because floor tiles must be installed accurately, bonded correctly, aligned consistently, finished cleanly and protected appropriately across different substrates, layouts, penetrations, steps, thresholds and specialised floor details.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to read task instructions; select PPE; apply legal, Australian Standards, WHS, environmental, manufacturer, workplace, drawing and specification requirements; inspect worksites and control hazards with signage and barricades; select and check tools and equipment; select materials, calculate quantities and handle tiles safely; clear floor areas and check tiles for size, pattern, colour, characteristics and fitness for purpose; check waterproof membranes; set out for symmetry, balance, movement joints and minimal waste; cut tiles and penetration holes to tolerance; prepare and apply screed; prepare clean substrates; match, mix and apply adhesives for tiles, substrates, membranes, acoustic underlays and de-coupling systems; and install, align, grout, clean and protect floor tiles, steps, treads, risers, thresholds, large format tiles, diagonal layouts and circular floor grate cuts.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can prepare and install floor tiles to different substrates by interpreting work requirements, applying safety and workplace controls, selecting and checking tools and materials, confirming tile, substrate and membrane suitability, setting out, cutting, screeding, bonding and installing tiles to specification, grouting, cleaning and protecting completed floor tile work across required floor applications.
TOPICS COVERED IN THIS ASSESSMENT:
This course assessment is based on the following topics:
1. Reading and interpreting task work instructions to plan floor tile installation sequences.
2. Selecting and using personal protective equipment for each stage of floor tiling work.
3. Applying laws, regulations, Australian Standards, WHS, environmental, manufacturer, workplace, drawing and specification requirements.
4. Inspecting worksites, assessing hazards and applying risk controls, signage and barricades.
5. Selecting tools and equipment for floor tile installation and checking serviceability before use.
6. Selecting floor tile materials, calculating quantities, handling materials safely and preparing them ready for use.
7. Clearing floor areas to be tiled and checking tiles for size, pattern, colour, characteristics and fitness for purpose.
8. Checking waterproof membranes for integrity and regulatory conformance before tiling.
9. Setting out floor tile work for symmetry, balance, movement joints and minimal waste.
10. Cutting floor tiles without damaging edges, surfaces or finishes.
11. Cutting holes for floor penetrations to required shape, size and specified tolerance.
12. Preparing and applying screed to specified consistency and surface finish.
13. Preparing substrate surfaces free from contaminants and residues before adhesive application.
14. Matching, mixing and applying adhesives to suit tile and substrate materials, including different substrates, waterproofing membranes, acoustic underlays and de-coupling systems.
15. Installing, aligning, grouting, cleaning and protecting floor tiles, steps, treads, risers, thresholds, large format tiles, diagonal layouts and circular floor grate cuts.
