Werner Bischof (1916-1954) spezialisierte und perfektionierte sich zunächst auf den grafischen, subtilen Einsatz von Licht und Schatten auf unbelebten Objekten, sah sich aber schließlich gezwungen, das menschliche Leid im Nachkriegseuropa zu dokumentieren. Seine Arbeit als Fotojournalist führte ihn quer durch Europa nach Japan, Korea und später nach Peru, aber Bischof sah sich immer als Künstler. Seine humanistische Herangehensweise an existenzielle menschliche Fragen in Verbindung mit seinem künstlerischen Talent machten ihn zu einem Klassiker der Schwarz-Weiß-Fotografie. Er starb bei einem Autounfall in den peruanischen Anden am 16. Mai 1954 im Alter von 38 Jahren.
