Bulbophyllum refractilingue J. J. Sm. is a small hot-to-warm-growing epiphytic orchid native to Borneo, found in lowland to high forests and limestone areas, often growing in moss, dry decaying leaf litter, on decaying logs, or sometimes terrestrial. It occurs at 100 to 400 meters elevation in its natural habitat.

Features:

• Size & Growth Habit: Small-sized plant; sympodial, with a creeping rhizome. Pseudobulbs cylindrical or somewhat flattened, spaced about 4.5 to 17 cm apart along the rhizome.

• Leaves: Each pseudobulb carries a single, apical, thin elliptic petiolate leaf; medium green.

• Flowers: Spring, summer, and winter blooming; inflorescences emerge basally (~11–16 cm long), with 5-8 flowers. Flower size approx 2 cm (about ¾ in). Flowers are somewhat fragrant, usually described as “mossy.”

Care Tips:

• Temperature: Maintain warm to hot conditions, roughly 23-30 °C (73-86 °F). Nights can be cooler but avoid cold drafts.

• Humidity: High humidity required, ideally ~82-89%, similar to its native environment.

• Light: Provide moderate to bright indirect light, similar to forest under-canopy. Avoid full direct sun which may burn leaves.

• Water: Keep media moist but not waterlogged. Water frequently, allowing the media to dry slightly before watering again. Mounted plants will need more frequent watering (or misting) particularly in warm weather.

• Potting / mounting / substrate: Works well mounted on bark, cork, tree fern slab; baskets or suspended pots can also work. Use substrate materials that retain moisture but still allow good drainage & airflow: e.g. bark, sphagnum moss, perlite.

• Fertilizer: A balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength year-round; possibly higher phosphorus before flowering, higher nitrogen during growth periods. Flush excess salts regularly.
